Plain Jane isn’t that boring

Plain Jane isn’t that boring

Plain Jane defined as “not fancy or glamorous” which describes me to the core. I am a jeans, t-shirt, and sneakers kind of woman.

I wear makeup seldomly, and when I do wear makeup, it is as little as possible. I must admit I enjoy wearing heavy eyeliner and mascara, but it’s more for the “just fucked” look more than anything else, so basically, I do not wear makeup to look like a magazine cover model unless it is a BDSM/goth looking model…

I worked in a male-dominated industry for over a decade, and there were only a few women that fitted into our industry. I have a crude mouth and a dirty mind, so I tend to fit in easily with the “boys.” I realized early on that this was not the place to dress up, and over the years, several women tried to get into the industry. However, you need to dress the part, and dressing up like you are looking for a husband will never gain you the respect you deserve, no matter how much you know or what degrees you have.

In a male-dominated industry, you need to be part of the pack; the pack needs to see YOU as part of the team and know that you bring something to the party regarding knowledge and intelligence in your industry. Plain Jane is a lot more rewarding than it sounds.

Dressing up in a miniskirt with fishnet stockings will get them interested, but for the wrong reason, once they see you as sex on legs, your career ends there. You will always be the show pony but will never contribute to the team or the business/industry.

I know of many talented women that dress provocatively at work and can never understand why they get passed over for promotions or managerial jobs when they are more than qualified for these positions. The ugly truth is you are a pretty face that makes all the clients/customers smile. At the same time, you welcome them and offer them something to drink, but that is where it ends. Unfortunately, nobody wonders how smart you are when they are fantasizing about bending you over the table or on your knees under the table.

There is a saying, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” if you dress like a porn star, you will always be treated like one. I am not saying you cannot wear nice dresses or pantsuits; I am not saying you cannot wear makeup and have your hair done. You need to sell yourself, but your knowledge will take you further than your looks.

I am a curvaceous woman with a triple D chest, often I needed to dress up, but there is a time a place for everything. In the everyday workplace scene, you are just creating the wrong impression, and it will cost you dearly down the line, especially as a woman. You will accomplish more as a plain jane in the workplace than a show pony.
