Demisexual and what it means

Demisexual is a sexual orientation that only allows people to feel a sexual attraction to another person once an emotional bond has been formed between them; also, known as demisexuality.

The emotional bond does not have to be a love or a romantic-based bond; it just needs to be an emotional connection allowing the demisexual person to feel a sexual attraction towards the other person.

Most people believe that they are demisexual because they first want an emotional bonded formed before being sexually active with another person; this is somewhat different from how demisexual people feel. You can be sexually attracted to someone without having sex with them, and you can have sex with someone without actually feeling attracted to them.

Demisexual people won’t necessarily be sexually attracted to a person once an emotional bond has been formed, and demisexual people can identify with any gender role or orientation; it all depends on how they want to identify themselves.

If you are demisexual, you might relate to the below scenarios:

  • You feel no sexual attraction to strangers or acquaintances.
  • You have only felt sexually attracted to close friends.
  • The thought of having a sexual relationship with a person you don’t know does not appeal to you.
  • Looks are irrelevant to you.
  • You have not had one-night stands.
  • Your sexual relationships started off as friendships first.

Whether you relate to any of the above references or not; does not really matter. Only you can ultimately determine whether you are demisexual or not.

Nobody in this world is the same; we are all unique in who we are, who we are attracted to, and what types of relationships we ultimately engage in. This does not change who you are or make you less of a person.
