There is rhythm play in impact play, and impact play is more than just a punishment. You will typically punish a submissive for breaking the rules with an agreed-upon punishment. This is, however, different from impact play; impact play is usually part of a scene and more of a reward than a punishment.

Punishment strokes are unpredictable and not intended to bring the submissive any enjoyment or arousal. It is ultimately a punishment to right a wrong, so to say. On the other hand, rhythm play is about the erotic stimulation of your submissive; it releases endorphins and warms them up for more intense play during the scene.

Once you have negotiated the scene and agreed upon safewords, it is time to set the scene. The submissive needs to take a comfortable position that won’t strain their limbs or back, and the Dom/me needs to ensure there is ample space available for the strikes when using different impact toys. Impact play still needs to be comfortable for both partners.

Depending on what was negotiated before the scene, there will typically be several different impact toys that will be used on the submissive during the scene. Usually, you will start with your hands and progress from spanking to light flogging, and as the rhythm and intensity increase, take it to paddles and caning. This all depends on your submissive and their pain tolerance; some submissives will take it to the extreme with several dozen canings in a scene, while others will stop after a few flogging strikes. This is why it’s essential to start with light implements and grow the momentum; as their endorphins start to peak with the rhythm play and the submissive experience the rush of the endorphins flowing through their body, their pain tolerance will begin adapting during the impact play.

Music is your friend during impact play, but more so during rhythm play, it creates a beat you can use on your submissive.  Now I love all music and can include just about any genre in a scene, but nothing sets the mood more than Opera or Classical music when it comes to rhythm play. It generally starts slowly and builds up, allowing for intense bursts, similar to rhythm play during the song. Verdi is always been a favorite in many dungeons.

After an intense scene like rhythm play, always allow for enough time to give your submissive adequate aftercare. It would be best if you always inspected the impact play areas afterward to ensure that you can clean and apply lotion or ointment if there is any broken skin or cuts.
