This weekend a leaked video of an NYC council candidate in a BDSM dungeon was leaked on Twitter, and thankfully it seems no cancel culture bullshit has arisen from the leaked video.

The council candidate himself did verify that it was him in the leaked video, and he said it was a recreational activity. He also said he is a “BDSMer” and enjoyed BDSM activities. I mean, it is 2021. Why is BDSM still seen as such a taboo act in this day and age? Is there really so little going on in the world that we need to try a kink shame a BDSM practitioner?

I don’t believe this is a newsworthy story, so what if a man is gagged while engaging in wax play and having washing pegs pulled off his nipples?!?

I would take more offense to the fact that someone was in possession of a video filmed in a dungeon without my permission. BDSM is a consensual sexual activity with two consenting adults; often, these activities or scenes are recorded. Sharing or leaking a video of someone without their consent is illegal, especially if it’s of a sexual nature; this could be considered revenge porn.

I would also think that apart from possibly causing the council candidate an unnecessary headache, this might have severe implications for the dungeon where the BDSM play took place. This could quite possibly cause significant damage to their name and reputation. I personally would think twice about going to a dungeon where videos have been leaked of unconsenting individuals.

I am not ashamed of my kinks or my interests; just about everyone that knows me, including my family, is aware that I have a keen interest in BDSM and that I am active in the community. So many people become part of BDSM communities because they want a place where they can participate in kinks or activities where they won’t be kink shamed. We all enjoy going to clubs and dungeons, where we can meet new people and even join in scenes, but if there is a possibility that I might be recorded without my consent. I will consider it a significant red flag and stop going to said club or dungeon.

In BDSM relationships, trust is the foundation of everything built. This also applies to people or acquaintances and especially to clubs and dungeons if I can not trust you to respect my privacy. It is essential to ensure that your privacy is always protected; even though BDSM is not illegal, many people still consider it taboo. Unlike the council candidate who handled it like a pro, not many people would escape such a “scandal” unscathed.

BDSM is slowly becoming more acceptable; however, having leaked videos of any kind could cause reputational damage. Whether you are in a gimp suit or just fooling around with a partner in a vanilla setting, more should be done to protect people’s privacy. I hope whoever is responsible for leaking this video will see their day in court and get what is due to them.
