Neue Deutsche Härte,

Neue Deutsche Härte was a genre I had never heard of until I was a teenager. I was in my teenage years when I started enjoying music and listening to it, my father has always had great taste in music, so I grew up listening to a lot of music. Being the typical teenager, though, I was convinced that his music was old, not realising at that time that music can be timeless. I wanted to create my music taste and started listening to different music, it initially began with listening to the commercial music that was being played all over various radio stations, but it all seemed so alike.

I was starting to enjoy rock n roll and metal, but again this was against the grain, so to say. This was often considered to be the devil’s music and not very ladylike. This did create some unwanted or unappreciated perceptions of who I was, especially in those years where our town was still very much in a “small town” mindset. I would, however, not let this change my search to find music that “spoke” to me, something that soothes your soul when it feels like the world is against you, needing your escape.

This is exactly what metal music did for me; it created an escape with music that understood me and my pain. Suddenly in the late nineties it became socially acceptable to enjoy metal music, and impressive bands were appearing everywhere. This was when I started hearing about a band called Rammstein; there was no YouTube at that time or any other music streaming services, so you had to wait till someone bought a CD or hopefully see it on MTV rocks late at night.

Once I heard the Rammstein song “Du Hast”, I knew I had to get more of their music. I loved their music and could just not get enough of them. When I finally got my hands on their album, I listened to it on repeat nonstop for months. This was my unknown introduction to a new emerging music genre, Neue Deutsche Härte, to this day, it is still my ultimate genre.

Rammstein opened my eyes up to a whole new world, and to this day, I am still a massive fan of theirs. Their music has matured over the years, yet they have stayed true to the core style of their music. At this point, my father had also become a fan of Rammstein and we started getting albums from other artists as the Neue Deutsche Härte genre developed into what it is today.

Neue Deutsche Härte has developed since the mid-1980s, it has rock and industrial metal characteristics with a slight techno sound at times. However, what truly makes it stand out and sound unique is that most songs are sung in German by a lead singer with a deep dominating voice.

Since then, I have become a fan of many more bands that fall into this genre; there are so many different bands with different twists that work well in this genre. I have become a massive fan of Unheilig since, the lead singer Bernd Heinrich “Der Graf” Graf has a very classic sounding voice but still very Neue Deutsche Härte, which adds a unique sound to their music.

Another band worth mentioning in my introduction to the Neue Deutsche Härte genre is, Eisbrecher they have a slightly different take on the genre, there is an upbeat techno element to many of their songs which is really refreshing and very catchy. I am surprised some of their songs have not made a more significant mainstream music impact.

As I submerge myself into the world of blogging, I will show you how fantastic the Neue Deutsche Härte genre is. I will open your eyes to all the incredible bands and their best albums. I will create a list of their best songs in my opinion, so that you too can listen to it and make up your mind about a possibly missed genre for many people out there.
