What is pet play?
Pet play is when a person decides to role play as an animal of their choosing, this can be done solely on their own or as part of a D/s dynamic. The Dom in a pet play the dynamic is called a caregiver or handler. The submissive is called a pet and usually identifies as a pup, bunny, or kitten, although you can role play pet play as any animal/ pet, you want to be during your play session.
Pet play has been likened to a type of meditative roleplay where the pet focuses only on their role as their chosen pet; this way, they allow themselves to escape from the real world and all the responsibilities that are part of the real world. It is a form of subspace that will enable them to be in the moment.
As mentioned above, the most popular pets are pups, bunnies, and kittens; however, you could pet play or animal play as any animal. If you have a primal side, you could roleplay as a wolf or tiger. It is entirely up to you what pet or animal you would like to roleplay.
If you are unsure of what pet or animal you would like to be, you could try making different animal sounds and decide on what sound resonates with you and “speaks” to your inner animal or pet. After you have selected what animal/s you would like to try roleplaying, try to mimic your chosen animal/s movements. Whether it be a bouncing puppy or the sultry swing of your hips like a cat, the world of pet play is open to you and whatever you want to be.
If you have chosen to be a puppy, you can change your mind at any point and transform into another animal or pet during pet play, and it is all about having fun and escaping the real world for a while.
Although pet play is a mindset, many pets love adding toys and gear to get into a better headspace or subspace; and man, oh man, there are many toys and types of wearable gear to choose from when it comes to pet play. It can be actual toys that you can buy at most pet shops, like rope toys and chewy toys for puppies or wool balls and mice with bells for kittens to play with, and there are so many choices available to get you into subspace.
You can buy countless types of plugs with tails regardless of what animal or pet you identify as for your roleplay, and you can even add a mask or ears to your pet play closet. The most exciting accessory to have as a pet in a D/s dynamic would be a collar from your caregiver or handler, this way, and you know you are owned. A collar is twice as fun if you are a puppy, as your handler can take you for a walk with your collar and leash.
Pet play should be something that both partners enjoy; it should be discussed before play to establish what is allowed or considered to be a boundary. Both partners should consent to the pet play and the duration of the scene. Even though it might be enticing to go for a walk with your partner outside in public on a leash, it is essential to remember that nobody in public has consented to be part of your scene or play. So please keep your roleplay in your apartment or yard.
