Basics of flogging

Flogging has been around for several centuries, often used as a form of corporal punishment. The sexual practice of flogging has, however, been around since the 1590s, at least.

Flogging can be a punishment, but many people use flogging for sexual arousal. It is used for sadomasochistic pleasure in many BDSM scenes. It will usually be used in scenes with sadists and masochists, as pleasure can be derived through pain.

Flogging isn’t difficult and can easily be self-taught; it does require concentration and practice. If you have decided to take up flogging, it is always best to start off with pillows or more complex surfaces to understand how much force is needed and how to zone in on specific areas. It would be best to also practice on yourself beforehand to know what your submissive or partner will be experiencing during a scene.

The basics of flogging:

  • Negotiating – You need to discuss safewords before a scene; this is a crucial part. Will your submissive be bound or gagged? If so, you will need to use a squeak toy or set of keys that can be utilized non-verbally as a safeword. Also, discuss any trauma and medical history to ensure you understand their boundaries.
  • Pain Threshold – You and your partner need to understand how much pain they can endure in a scene. Both of you should set up a practice scene to establish this. You can flog your partner or submissive and have them call out a number based on the pain they are experiencing; use the 1 – 10 system. One being not sore and ten being excruciating.
  • Targeted areas – There are many areas on the body that can be flogged, but some areas should be avoided. Do not flog organ areas like the kidneys; avoid hitting joints as well. You should never flog someone’s head, face, or neck as this is reckless and cause severe damage or injury. The best areas to flog are the buttocks, back, shoulders and thighs. You can flog the chest or groin area; this has to, however, be done lightly and with care.
  • The desired effect – Does your partner want the flogging to thud or sting? There are different floggers available for thuds and stings. Softer and heavier tails create more of a thud, and narrow harder tails cause a sting, as do rubber or braided tails. Always avoid wrapping of the tails as this could cause an undesired sting, areas where the tails could easily wrap are the buttocks close to the hips or inner thighs; curvy areas could quickly get wrapped and sting a lot more.
  • Aftercare – Aftercare with flogging is very important; always inspect the areas of the body that were flogged to see if any skin was broken during the scene. You can either bath or shower with your partner afterward; hot water will help soothe the skin. After that, apply lotion to your partner’s body and, if necessary, a band-aid.

Flogging is an activity that both partners should enjoy; it should only be brought into a scene if both partners have consented. Start flogging slowly and build it up gradually; pay attention to your partner and their body. Incorporate different floggers for different areas and desired effects.
