Human trafficking is the real pandemic of our world; it is a threat to children, women, and men. This should be a considerable concern to everyone, it, however, does not seem to be a big talking point and it needs to be as it has become one of the most horrific widespread crimes in the world and blatant disrespect for human life.

Human traffickers will use any means possible to coerce, deceive and force people into this “life”. Some of the most common human trafficking uses are:

  • sexual exploitation
  • organ harvesting
  • forced marriage
  • child soldiers
  • domestic servitude

According to the October report by We Are Social, our world has a population of 7.81 billion people, with 4.14 billion people being active social media users, that is close to 53% of our population, and these numbers will have no doubt increased since then.

Human trafficking trends and analytics are indicating that human traffickers are using social media to target their potential victims. Online grooming is becoming the new norm with human trafficking, apart from social media, human traffickers will also approach their victims on various gaming platforms and most dating dating sites.

Their MO (modus operandi) is to impersonate someone and lure you into an online relationship or friendship so that they can gain your trust and “build” a relationship with you. Once you trust them, they will try to convince you to meet them in real life so that you can take your relationship/ friendship to the next level. They might even persuade you into sending them intimate images of yourself, that they will later use to blackmail you.

Millions of people go onto social media looking to meet new friends or possibly love interests, and this has become the new way to meet people in our millennium. Now not only do you have to be on the lookout for creeps, but you also have to bear in mind that any person you meet online, may seem perfect to you as they are only trying to convince you to trust them as they portray your perfect “person”.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2016, 40.3 million people were victims of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. 71% of these victims were women and girls. It is estimated that 4.8 million of these victims were used specifically for sexual exploitation.

You need to be more vigilant in all aspects of your life, as a woman warn your friends and family members to the real dangers lurking out there. It is a real threat and a reality to millions of children, women, and men.

If you see something say something, report it to your local police station immediately. You can also contact organisations related to human trafficking and modern-day slavery.

Let us be the change we want to see in the world; this needs to be a trending issue worldwide!
