Cancel culture, is this the new norm?

Cancel culture refers to the widespread practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture usually takes place on social media in the form of group shaming.

We live in a world with a population of 7.8 billion people, and you will get people in this world who’s opinion differs from yours. Firstly this is normal; we can’t all be the same (that will come with the AI takeover ?). It is healthy to have different views and perceptions; this creates change and gets people talking.

Often cancel culture is used to go after businesses, celebrities, and influencers. Yes, sometimes they are deserving of a smack upside the head and told to catch a wake-up. However, I am sure there is a better way to teach/show them the right way than ruining their careers and personal lives. Everything in life can be a teaching moment, depending on how you approach it and deal with it.

We are creating a society where all our free thinkers, future academics, and leaders will become hesitant to speak out on specific issues or injustices because of cancel culture.

Everybody is entitled to free speech and to have their own opinions without fearing censorship or cancel culture. We can actively debate with people we disagree with and even try to show them different views or perspectives on topics. This way, not only could you change their minds, but you could also convince others to look at things differently.

We were all raised differently under different circumstances; we all, at some point in our lives, think that what we believe or know is the “right” way. However, as we mature, our opinions and beliefs change; this is typical as you experience or see injustices worldwide. We grow and learn from these experiences, but to be a cowardly keyboard warrior that jumps on the group think bus will only destroy our world. You cant cancel everything you don’t like or agree with, and this is not a video game that you can just close and reopen when it suits you.

This is your life, and you need to stand up for what you believe in and what you feel is right or wrong in this world; you can debate and learn from different people.

You might jump on the cancel culture bus today, and it might just be you that becomes the next cancel culture target in a few years; always be willing to learn and grow as a person.
