How BDSM can help release stress and anxiety

BDSM can help release stress and anxiety is often a topic that comes up with other kinksters. BDSM is considered taboo and a form of abuse; BDSM participants are often stigmatized as perverted or twisted individuals who act out disturbing fantasies or fetishes. This, of course, is furthest from the truth.

Whatever your opinion on BDSM might be, the last thing you would think is that BDSM can help release stress and anxiety. It is frequently associated instead with pain, punishment, whips, and chains.

We are all stressed and have our own ways of dealing with stress; some like to exercise or practice yoga, some will turn to alcohol or drugs, and others take up hobbies. We are all different in what we want and what we do to take the “edge” off. However, we are all stressed in this day and age.

In BDSM, when you are in a dynamic with a partner and have aligned kinks and fetishes, you know what works for you and your partner. You know what each other’s pleasure and pain points are and how to get them there.

In BDSM, both partners can experience what is called subspace or dom space.  This is often achieved through many different forms of BDSM; it could be rope play, also known as shibari. It could be punishments for disobeying rules or not doing your tasks. Or by performing your tasks and being rewarded for completing them. Funishment is often used as a reward as well.

With subspace, even though your movement may be restricted in bondage, or you may take pleasure in pain or punishment, it creates an escape for you. You let go of everything that is stressing you out, and you just live in the moment. You enjoy the highs of the endorphins pumping through your body, creating a clean and clear state of consciousness.

The same can be said about Dom space; as a Dom/me, you plan out a scene or activity and re-create it so that you submissive can experience it and get caught up in all the elements you have planned and orchestrated. The focus and concentration required to make this all happen also releases endorphins that allow the Dom/me to experience their own moment of clarity and fulfillment.

BDSM creates an emotional bond between both partners, and there is a lot of trust and communication needed in a power exchange. To be able to dominate a partner or completely submit to a partner takes time and patience. This creates a safe space for both of you to truly let go and enjoy the moment and scene.

BDSM means different things to different people; we all have our kinks and fetishes that help us achieve our bliss and manage our stress or anxiety through BDSM.
